You Are the Wilderness

Monday, October 5, 2020

While the content is more of a status update and not particularly insightful as it leans on the obvious, Vlog #3 is out! (UPDATE: Link retired!)

Admittedly, I'm kicking myself (just not with that leg). I could make the argument against resistance training altogether with What If analysis, but, armchair quarterbacking is never applicable, encouraging or even helpful!

The funny thing is that I'm usually mindful of warmup and stretching, but I gotta admit, I was just pumped up this morning to put my work in!

And while I am now dealing with a limp, if it's the same tomorrow, it's cool, I'll just shift my focus back to meditation, something I've set aside and would be interested in picking back up again—it's not exactly something I can mine for vlog content—what do I know, maybe it's EXACTLY that! Now, relatable content...that's another matter altogether! The point is that whatever happens, shake it off and move.

Of course, relatable content, would seem to indicate that I know to whom I am relating...and the answer is that I'm pretty sure I am talking to myself. It is the dilemma of us who dwell disconnected in the digital wilderness.

It amuses me how we're forever looking back and looking forward while failing to realize we are simultaneously both the past and the future.

Extreme Ways

Sunday, October 4, 2020

While I woke up at 4 AM this Sunday morning unassisted, I knew that I needed more recovery time and fought my desire to work out. I love that space of my day and it's hard to give it up!

It's funny: sometimes when we back off from something for a time, we forget how much we enjoy it. How do we leave it in the first place? In this context, I'm sure it was a late night followed by another—maybe another The Office marathon via DVD, one thing supersedes another just because of the linearity of time. Another example: while I love audiobook consumption through Libby, lately, I've been listening/living in music.

Of course, one could argue that nothing shuts down one of my workouts like an audiobook, so perhaps this isn't a neutral outcome.

Speaking about music motivation, I've been listening to Jason Bourne soundtracks to liven up an otherwise mundane existence. I've always felt that way about those films ever since The Bourne Identity was released. Do anything and it becomes epic when listening to a Bourne score. You'll be flush with resolve and will be thinking 10 moves ahead. Try it! Even walking in a store! You might even glance at your six.

Last week, I was caught up in the last soundtrack, Jason Bourne including another remix of the Moby classic. While I plan on linking content that opens up a door into my work that motivates me, I'll include my Bourne playlist.

I Remember You

Saturday, October 3, 2020

This morning, I shot Vlog #2. And while I would love to regale a tale with this morning's workout, I'll just refer my reader to the video supplement! Suffice it to say, I'm finding my quads to be spent.

Vlog #2 (UPDATE: Link retired!)

The other day, I resubscribed to a service that I find motivating during my cardio sessions: UFC's Fight Pass. There's a strong, positive correlation to my viewership and the overall success of my approach in both duration and intensity. Audiobooks, football—even music, fail to compete. If I had a large TV and broadband access, I suppose basketball might compete, but at this juncture, I might as well speak of taking laps aboard a yacht cruising across the Caribbean!

I am loving this time of year as the temperatures drop and we move toward the Christmas season. As I wrote a couple of years back:

Fall is the romance of yesteryear. Fun memories are wrapped up in this time; times of beginnings and opportunities; and the promise of acquiring more knowledge in a discipline.

I took a moment this morning around 5AM to embrace the night sky, breathing the brisk air underneath the canopy of stars. Unmarred by city lights, the world seems a million miles away from my country porch.

I look forward to reconnecting with people again come New Year's Eve. I might even return to the news again since it would be unavoidable in a return to Facebook. That said, my mind is a content place. I look forward to the day when AI has advanced to give my own news, stories informing me of my own sphere:

  • Was there an adroit field mouse that parkoured my soda can / water bucket trap?
  • What beasts stayed in the yard overnight?
  • A cultural feature on people who lived here 200 years ago.
  • Is the groundhog family gone for good?
  • What is the status on the fire ant excursion?
  • An opinion piece on the best decade of music.

A sports recap would be awesome!
